Most trees are unlocked by leveling up, but some are unlocked by expanding land. Each of the land expansions are given specific names which can be found by hovering over the land or clicking upon them.

Trees are a one time purchase which grow fruit, nuts or produce wood some time after they are watered. Fruit bearing trees will not wither. Trees can not be planted on soil and take up 3x3 grid spaces, unless planted in a grove, in which case they take up 2 by 2 space (per tree), need 1 less   Water and produce 1 more tree product if they are planted with 4 of the same kind in a single grove.

With groves you also can shorten or increase the harvesting time needed for trees. To shorten the harvesting time, place other trees in the grove with a lower harvesting time.
